Problem Oil level/drain plug has worked loose and fallen out.

Actual/common cause Fear of over-tightening and breaking the head off/wear & tear/incompetence.

Solution

Replace the drain plug with the level plug and replace the level plug with the oil breather from the top of the chaincase. You'll have to block the hole in the breather as best you can as well as the gaping hole in the top of the casings it's vacated. Jamming pieces of rag in both and using a bootlace to secure the top one might get you home.

Complications

If either of these plugs has fallen out you'll have very little gearbox in there. If you don't have a spare bottle, you can resort to using two-stroke oil but only for very short distances and be prepared to replace your clutch plates and possibly your drive-side crankshaft bearing and rear hub bearing afterwards.

It's actually more of a worry if, after carrying out this bodge, you are not weeping oil because this means there could be a pressure build up in the chaincase leading to a blown drive-side oil seal!

Podgiest bodge A snapped flywheel Woodruff Key could be replaced with part of a normal key if it's a tight enough fit and if you can get the flywheel tighten properly.

Broken toolbox lock/lost key? The door has enough 'give' that pushing down on the lock and flexing the middle out will free the locking tab on the back
