Problem Circlip popped off gear selector arm and vanished.

Actual/common cause

Poor design can mean the silly wee circlip pops off quite easily. Avoid this problem by cutting the post off, drilling out the arm, tapping (M6) and fitting an engineering stud and Nyloc nut or drilling through the post and fitting a split pin in the first place.

Solution

I could have tried cutting a few strands of control cable inner to wrap around the post (in the circlip groove) and retain a close-fitting washer on top of the tie rod. In the end I opted for the bodger's perennial, a cable-tie, wrapped around the selector arm and tie-rod in best 'boy scout', figure-of-eight, fashion as shown.

Complications

None - it's still like that after some nine-years!
