Problem

(The lucky) snapped cable

Actual/common cause

Neglecting an obviously frayed cable/short spare cable/road-side error (without pointing any fingers, this problem can sometimes be caused if you trim your last spare cable too short in error)

The type of break shown is very uncommon but was easily fixed with part of an electrical connector block, which most have in their toolbox. Overlap the two split ends so that both screws are used for both ends if there's enough play - just another reason to tie-up spare cable rather than trimming when fitting in the first place!

Complications

Remember the connector is brass and will split if over-tightened. I wouldn't trust this bodge for either brake cable.

Podgiest bodge

The soldered nipples on cables can be easily melted and re-soldered by either using a lighter directly on them or even by laying the cable over both battery terminals to generate heat. Make the nipple stronger by splaying the strands out directly behind the nipple.
